2026 marks the 100th Anniversary since local author A.A. Milne released his first Winnie the Pooh storybook. The much loved collection of stories followed Christopher Robin, Pooh Bear and their friends on adventures around the 'Hundred Aker Wood'. The forest in the books was inspired by the Ashdown Forest in East Sussex. To celebrate the occasion, Ashdown Park Hotel (located in the heart of Ashdown Forest), are hosting a collection of inspired menus, events and packages, to bring magic of Pooh's world to life.
A.A. Milne and Christopher Robin
Few stories feel as timeless and comforting as Winnie the Pooh, and the magic began in a small village called Hartfield. A.A. Milne found inspiration for the stories in the heathland and quiet woodlands surrounding the family home, and begun to write stories for his son, Christopher. Christopher Robin’s own teddy bear, along with his other toys, became the characters we know and love today - Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, Kanga and Roo. Their adventures were shaped by real walks, real places and real moments shared between father and son in the forest.
The Ashdown Forest
Ashdown Forest is not an exact replica of the 'Hundred Aker Wood' - but it comes wonderfully close. Spanning over 6,500 acres, the forest is actually far larger than the fictional hundred acres, yet many of its most recognisable landmarks appear almost exactly as they do in the books and original E.H. Shepard illustrations. Visitors can still cross Poohsticks Bridge, where Pooh and friends famously invented the game. Gill’s Lap, another key location, is widely believed to be the spot that inspired the Enchanted Place where Christopher Robin says goodbye to Pooh. Walking through Ashdown Forest today feels like stepping into a living storybook.
Keeping the Stories Alive
The backdrop for the stories is carefully cared for by the Ashdown Forest Foundation, who's base sits just opposite Ashdown Park Hotel. Their conservation work ensures that the forest remains protected for future generations to explore and enjoy.
Meanwhile, in Hartfield, the much-loved Pooh-Corner Cafe brings a touch of magic to visitors. We are delighted to collaborate with them to bring a small 'Pooh-seum' into Ashdown Park, offering guests a charming glimpse into the stories.
Celebrating 100 Years of Winnie the Pooh at Ashdown Park
To mark the centenary, Ashdown Park Hotel is celebrating in the most fitting way - nostalgia, indulgence and a touch of honey. Throughout the year there will be a number of menus, events and packages inspired to mark the occasion, starting with the Hunny Pot Afternoon Tea, launching on A.A. Milne's birthday (18th January). Expect delicate, honey-laced treats, paired with timeless afternoon tea classics.
