As winter draws in, there’s nothing like getting cosy with a good book and a mug of cocoa (or a hot toddy or two). So here’s our rundown of five of this season’s most exciting new releases:
1. First Lady by Sonia Purnell
First Lady, Sonia Purnell’s biography of Winston Churchill’s wife, Clementine, promises to offer a fresh perspective on the woman who helped bring one of Britain’s most memorable prime ministers into power. Expect fascinating insights into political and domestic struggles behind the curtains of Number 10.
2. The Girl in the Spider’s Web by Stieg Larsson
Thriller fans have a reason to be cheerful - The Girl in the Spider’s Web is the fourth instalment of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series, which began with The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo. It’s the first not to be written by Larsson (who died in 2004) and is instead authored by fellow Swede, David Lagercrantz.
3. The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood
Margaret Atwood has a knack for delighting both fans of science fiction and literary fiction alike. The Heart Goes Last will likely be no exception, as it creates a near-future universe in which “the lawful are locked up and the lawless roam free”. The story centres around a couple who are offered the chance to live in suburban utopia, with just one catch – they have to give up their freedom. It’s bound to go horribly wrong.
4. Slade House by David Mitchell
Slade House by Cloud Atlas author
David Mitchell had an interesting beginning – it started out as a short taking on a life of its own, it has now become a full-length work. The story begins with a boy and his mother receiving an invitation to a mysterious London house party. Sounds intriguing.
5. Kitchen Notebook by Rachel Khoo
Rachel Khoo’s Kitchen Notebook will contain 100 new recipes from the bestselling cookbook author, including winter warmer specialities like Slow Roasted Pork Belly with Sloe Gin and Rhubarb & Custard Millefeuille, all in full-colour photography. Caution - don’t read while hungry.
