Familiar Surroundings

When my Dad mentioned that he was looking for a venue to hold my Nana’s 85th birthday next year I had no hesitation in recommending The Grand Hotel, Eastbourne – not because of the passé stereotype of Eastbourne, but because I knew that she (and all my family) would receive excellent service in 5 star surroundings.

Part one of the charm offensive was to take my Nana for afternoon tea at The Grand this Saturday….and I have to say that it was nice to visit for pleasure rather than business (something I don’t do enough of at all our hotels).

So we (my parents, Nana, wife and 2 children) descended on mass and took our seats in the great hall.  I don’t think my Nana could quite believe the array of treats that were laid out before us, when the afternoon tea arrived; sandwiches, scones, cakes plus cookies, jelly (with popping candy) and milkshakes for the children.  And nothing was too much trouble for the staff – a top up here, some more jam there….

We also had the pleasure if a brief ‘show round’ (to use the industry jargon) with Jamieson Berriman, the deputy general manager.  He showed us the splendid Princes Room and the recently refurbished Arlington Room as well as highlighting areas of the hotel that could be used for a drinks reception or group photographs.

Before we headed home there was time for a quick stroll along the seafront and a game of tag on the Western Lawns, for the younger legs!

For purely selfish reasons, and biased though I am, I hope we do book The Grand for Nana’s birthday – I can't imagine having half as good a time anywhere else……
